Facebook Billionaires

Goldman Sachs clients are in the process of buying $2 billion worth of Facebook stock at a $50 billion valuation. The $50 billion valuation means lots of Facebook employees, ex-employees, investors and other stakeholders are, on paper, now billionaires.Once the Facebook inevitibe IPOs sometime this year, that paper wealth is going turn into spendable cash.

But who at Facebook owns how much stock? Lets take a look.

Mark Zuckerberg owns 24% of Facebook, worth $12 billion.

Accel Partners owns around 8% of Facebook, worth $4 billion

Digital Sky Technologies owns more than 10% of Facebook, worth at least $5 billion

Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz, who is no longer with the company, owns 6%, worth $3 billion

Eduardo Saverin, a Facebook cofounder who once sued the company, owns 5%, worth $2.5 billion

Former Facebook president and Sean Parker, was forced to leave Facebook after being arrested for cocaine possession, owns 4 percent, worth $2 billion

Facebook's first outside investor, Peter Thiel, owns 3%, worth $1.5 billion

Greylock partners owns 1.5% worth $750 Million

Meritech Capital Ventures owns ~1.5%, worth $750 million
Microsoft owns 1.3% of Facebook, worth $650 million
Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-Shing owns .75% of Facebook, worth $375 million
Giant ad agency Interpublic Group owns just less than .5%, worth $250 million
Early employees Adam D'Angelo, Matt Cohler, Jeff Rothschild, Chris Hughes and Owen Van Natta own less than 1%
Mark Pincus and Reid Hoffman, Facebook angel investors, and owners of an important social networking patent, own a chunk of Facebook stock
Western Technology Investments, which loaned Facebook $3.6 million during its early days, also bought $25,000 worth of equity in its first funding round.

Why Do People Friend and Follow Brands?

Why Do People Friend and Follow Brands?

Two separate studies have been released over the past week that show why people "friend" and "follow" brands on sites like Facebook and Twitter.

The first, from Google, looked at Facebook. The study found that 55 percent of Facebook users do not friend or "like" any brands on Facebook. Of those who do, 18 percent become a fan of one or two brands, 11 percent do so for three or four brands, 10 percent five to nine brands and just 6 percent ten or more brands. And why do they become fans?

25 percent to receive discounts and promotions
18 percent to show others they support the brands
10 percent because it's fun and entertaining
8 percent to hear new info first

The second study comes from ExactTarget and surveyed Twitter users ages 15 and up. They found that:

38 percent of users follow brands to get updates on future products
31 percent to receive discounts and promotions
30 percent to get updates on upcoming sales
28 percent to get a "freebie"

The writing is on the wall. Your top business social networking priorities should be to offer discounts and promotions, and to keep users informed about product releases and other company news that will benefit the user. This does not mean announcing a new CFO, but rather a new product line, an update to an exisiting product or news about how your products can help improve consumers' quality of life, for example.

Of course, discounts and promotions loom large. Build a value system with users by rewarding their loyalty with discounts and you are likely to see new fans and followers. And, don't stop at promoting this strategy solely on networks - make sure your website provides links to your network profiles and informing users that, by becoming a fan or follower, they can expect discounts and promotions. As always, set a strategy including well-defined limits. After all, you don't want to give away the store should a discount go viral.

The Social Network Trailer

Twitter Auto Pilot

I sat in a meeting this morning where the term twitter auto pilot came to play. Got me wonder if this would work for affiliate marketing, and how this would affect social sites being bombarded with spam. I found a site called The Twitter Traffic Machine but the homepage didnt offer much information unless you pay. I'm going to write some code and see what happens. I'll keep everyone posted.
