According to Twitter, they concentrate on highly sought users in music, acting, fashion, government, politics, religion, journalism, media, advertising, business, and other key interest areas.  Although there really isn't a science to it, adding your twitter badge on your website helps. Keep in mind twitter does not accept verification requests from the general public, therefore causing a new market of companies that offer "twitter authentication" for a price. Would I pay for twitter verification, probably not, would you?
